Cabin Crew Career

"Dream until your dreams come true"

Pursuing my dream course can be a good feeling, image, reputation and so many more. But the dream course I was planning on taking was a bit common nowadays. Even though this dream was so while back, I concluded that I won't pursue that specific course. Maybe you are wondering what this common course, what I dreamt of doing. To answer that question its Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management. A Flight Attendant roster can vary greatly between different airlines. In some airlines flight attendants come home every night after duty whereas cabin crew in other airlines are regularly away on multi-day trips and so can only spend about a third of their time at home. It depends a lot on the airline and the destinations the airline flies to whether they operate mainly short haul and domestic flights, or long haul and international flights.

Some airlines usually the low-cost carriers or flights only operate short haul flights whereas other airlines only operate long haul flights. Most airlines however do a mixture of short and long haul flights. Let’s look at the different lengths of flights so we have an idea of the differences between short and long haul. Note this is a rough guide and some airlines define short and long haul in different ways.

Nowadays there are thousands of men Flight Attendants. You can find male Flight Attendants literally in any airline in the world  from big airlines to regional airlines. A guy can most definitely be a Flight Attendant these days.

Flight Attendants who are men can be referred to as a Flight Attendant or Cabin Crew just like a woman can. Both of these terms can refer to Flight Attendants who are men or women. The terms Air Steward and Flight Steward refer specifically to a male, whereas the terms Air Stewardess and Air Hostess are specifically for women.  Obviously getting paid while travelling is the best part! This job gives you the opportunity to travel to new and exciting destinations and get paid for doing so! Not only that but most airlines also pay you some money for the downtime you have on your layover! So whilst you’re sipping on that cocktail in The Seychelles or shopping in Tokyo, you’re getting paid. Your airline also pays for your hotel room. So if the hotel is in a great location it is so awesome! Being a flight attendant is perfect for those who love meeting people as you meet so many new people in this job every day! Your passengers, the crew and the local people you meet on your layovers! They will often have very different cultures and backgrounds to you and will tell you some fascinating stories about their countries. I learnt so much about different cultures during my time as a cabin crew!

The body clock of a flight attendant is all over the place when you are flying. Therefore your metabolic rate decreases and it is very easy to gain a little unwanted weight. Not to mind those hideously fattening casseroles cabin crew eat onboard, or the piles of snacks we get through to keep ourselves awake and make the time pass whilst the passengers are sleeping. Flying can also play havoc with your immune system. Many flight attendants get sick as their body can’t cope with their inconsistent sleep patterns and jam-packed schedules. Yet they will often get penalized if they phone sick. I know a lot of flight attendants in different airlines who have felt pressured to go into work when they probably weren’t fit to work. And the worst thing is going to work when you’re feeling ill. Even going to work with a cold can be a disaster for flight attendants as it can lead to a perforated eardrum.
